St. Louis Metro PD wins Technology Award for SafeCity™ crime analysis website

St. Louis, MO (May 19, 2003) The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) has been awarded a 2003 St. Louis Technology Award for its SafeCity™ website. Developed and hosted by Kinetic Solutions, SafeCity™ is a publicly accessible crime analysis geographic information system.

The judging panel, comprised of scientists and technology experts from Washington University, St. Louis University and private industry, based their selections on criteria that included the scope and impact of the technology. In a city that is often cited in the national media for its high crime rates, the impact of SafeCity™ is being felt by both law enforcement and residents. As an integral part of the SLMPD commitment to open up the department and give citizens more access to information, SLMPD Chief Joesph Mokwa stated that as a result of SafeCity™ "the public is going to demand accountability from us, because they are going to see what the issues are, and … we're willing to accept that responsibility."

Requiring no specialized computer or mapping skills, the site allows visitors to create maps showing incidents of crime that meet their choice of criteria (i.e., type of crime, time of day, etc.). SafeCity™ is automatically updated every 18 to 24 hours using data from the SLMPD Computer Aided Dispatch system.
