G-Live
G-Live White
Paper
In January 1997, Graphic Data Systems (GDS) announced that it
would not longer continue to develop GDS software. In response
to the need created by this announcement, Kinetic Solutions application
developers created an External Program Interface (EPI) GDS translator
that transfers the entire data model-graphics, text, attributes,
and topological relationships-into a new target system.
G-Live provides a semantic translator for specifying how features
in one system are to be represented in the target system. This
means that you can bring in data from any of a number of sources
to form a single complete model. The EPI program is used to extract
data, which is then sent over a network directly to the target
system for display. This eliminates the need for intermediate
files that must be coordinated and updated.
The G-Live approach alters the traditional translation process
by allowing users to access to both converted and unconverted
data during the translation process. Unconverted data is accessed
through G-Live, which enables all groups to continue to work.
All data is available in the new model, on the new system, from
the first day of the process.
